1970 large hardcover facsimile of original 1853 edition. 1970 second edition. FACSIMILE of rare original 1854 edition. Original black cloth with gilt lettering front and spine. The book has clean cover, small booksellers stamp on corner of FFEP otherwise no previous owner marks or writing on any pages, no foxing, binding staples showing at page vi-vii of index where page vii pulled through staples because they were placed to far from the gutter for page to open properly (but binding very solid and not loose or broken). The original dust jacket has tiny loss at spine ends, bookseller stamp on lower front flap corner, two 15mm tears upper front, some loss along front fold. It appears that plate #30 at page 382 was never published for this book and that the folding map was never published for this book. Yakushi84 indicates no map for first edition or this 1970 2nd edition, but it is likely he examined only copies of the 1854 edition that were likely rebound and lacking the map.We once encountered an1854 first edition with a folding map titled "Map of the Punjab, Western Himalaya and adjoining parts of Tibet." It is unlikely that the publisher of this 1970 edition could locate an original map to copy for this edition. As for the b/w plate that is lacking at page 282, very careful collation by JP indicates it was never placed in this book.
