There is a preface (16pp), the main text (277pp), an unpaginated appendix containing 13 contemporary extracts and an unpaginated index. Bound in contemporary full leather binding with five raised bands to the spine. The gilt title lettering on the spine 'Leicester's Life' is partially worn away. The spine has chipping at the top and bottom and some edge cracking - the binding is slightly slack but secure enough. The corners are bumped with some rubbing and fraying and there is a little surface wear to the front and rear panels with a small stain near the top left corner of the rear panel. Name of a previous owner in ink to the front free endpaper - Lady Wale of Shelford near Cambridge - with a family bookplate to the front pastedown. Browning to the endpapers with some scribbles in ink to the edges of the rear endpapers. There is also some browning to the title page and the frontispiece - the title page is printed in red and black but the pages are otherwise generally unmarked. First printing.
