Third printing, 1963. Part of the American Naturalist Series. Signed on the title page in a blue pen, "Ade Murie," his nickname. Uncommon signed. A book that highlights the large mammals of Alaska, as Murie as a wildlife biologist for the National Park Service, which he worked for 32 years; there are chapters here on grizzly bears, wolves, lynx, arctic fox, caribou, wolverine, and Dall sheep. The book won the John Burroughs Medal for natural history writing in 1963. Adolph Murie was an activist against predator control and for wilderness protection, and along withhis brother Olaus (the illustrator here) and Olaus's wife Margaret Murie was instrumental in the establishment of Teton National Park. Gray cloth boards with wildlife illustrations in brown. With an ownership signature (Stu Motter) at the top of the front free endpaper. A near fine book on account of one small depression at the center of the front board; in a near fine jacket with mainly some rubbing to rear edge at flap.
