468 p. 8vo. Language: French. 3/4 red morocco, gilt title stamped on spine cover, gilt upper leaf edge, marble boards and endpapers. Dimensions: 1 W x 5 D x 7.5 H inches. Approx. weight: 1 pound. 3 ounces. About the work and author: Madame Bovary, novel by Gustave Flaubert, serialized in the Revue de Paris in 1856 and then published in two volumes the following year. Flaubert transformed a commonplace story of adultery into an enduring work of profound humanity. The work was a sharply realistic portrayal of provincial bourgeois boredom and adultery, led to his trial (and narrow acquittal) on charges of immorality. Madame Bovary is considered Flaubert’s masterpiece, and, according to some, it ushered in a new age of realism in literature. (Britannica) CONDITION NOTES: Very good; light wear not commensurate with age and use (e.g. light-moderately sunned spine, slight edge wear at some extremities-scratched lower front corner cap, light age-toned text pages - endpapers and margins of some text pages a little darker, see example text page), strong square spine/tight binding and hinges, clean text. A beautiful copy.
