Loosely based on William Arnold's 1978 novel "Shadowland," a heavily fictionalized and widely discredited account of the life of actress Frances Farmer, whose film career was famously halted by rapid mental deterioration and a subsequent diagnosis with paranoid schizophrenia in 1942.
