Full dark blue calf with raised bands and gilt compartments, elaborate gilt rolls and fillets to boards, with central decoration in blind. Edge rolls and inner dentelles. All edges marbled. Marbled endpapers with bookplates of Com. Vic. Baillet de Latour to pastedowns. This may be the Austrian Countess Vincent Baillet de Latour (d. 1942), whose first marriage was to Skye clan chief Norman Macleod of Macleod (d. 1895). Her involvement in archaeological excavations on Skye would explain the presence of such antiquarian works in her library (and the fact that it was acquired from a Skye collection). Some scuffing and wear to leather, but no splits to joints. Binding sound. Some minor foxing. Repair to large folding map. A very presentable set, of an influential Highland history, with interesting provenance. David Stewart of Garth (1772-1829) was a Scottish soldier, author and antiquarian. The present, highly popular, work was responsible for largely creating the modern image of the Highlander, the clans and Scottish regiments and is considered the foundation for all subsequent work on Highlanders, clans and Scottish regiments system.
