Silas Weir Mitchell (1829-1914) was an American doctor who worked with injured soldiers during the American Civil War and then became a specialist in neurology, developing the rest cure, which included confinement to bed, diet, massage, and electrotherapy. One of his patients was Charlotte Perkins Gilman, who, after being forced to endure his rest cure, wrote the famous short story The Yellow Wallpaper. He also became a successful writer of fiction and nonfiction.
