This large chart of a bend in the Ohio River shows the results of recent surveys performed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Their goal was to improve the harbor facilities at Evansville, Indiana by constructing a series of dikes to 'properly direct and confine the flow of the river at low stages'. The proposed dikes are highlighted in red. Navigational hazards, depth soundings, and notable coastal structures are noted throughout. The map was designed by J. Nelson Caldwell under the direction of Lieut.? Colonel Amos Stickney. Published in 1895 by the Government Printing Office for distribution to members of the 53rd Congress. Sheet Width (in) 40.5 Sheet Height (in) 29.5 Condition Description Printed on somewhat thin paper that is sharply creased along originally issued fold lines. Moderate wear and several spots of separation in the lower left have been repaired on the verso with old archival materials. Faint discoloration as a result, plus some nearby toning along the fold line through the title. Some other wear and staining in the margins (center right), but overall in about good condition. Blank on verso. Includes 3 pages of accompanying text disbound from original report.
