Map [4 1/2" x 6 1/2"] in mat [10 1/2" x 12"]. Top third of mat subtly discolored. This early map centers on a narrow and misshapen Chesapeake Bay. Only Jamestown and Pomejok are shown, but Maryland is named as well as numerous Indian tribes. Nicely hand colored. Alain Manesson Mallet (1630-1706) was a French cartographer and military engineer who was appointed to the court of Louis XIV. He is mostly known for his exhaustive 5-volume work "Description de L'Univers" (1683).
