A comprehensive and compact edition of Scott's poetry. This edition is distinguished as the first to feature the verse passages from Scott's novels and memoirs, not previously included in collected editions of his Poetical Works. A testament to Scott's enduring popularity during the Victorian period, both his prose and poetical works were repeatedly published as collected editions. The first of the collected Poetical Works was published in 1820, and they were issued in many volumes. This volume has a fittingly bucolic gift inscription on the first blank, dated 23 November 1851, from one Reverend John Gregson to Mr Stesh of Appleford, Oxfordshire, thanking Stesh for allowing him to leave with him his carriage and horses each Sunday for seven years, painting a clear picture of country life in the 1850s. Octavo (227 x 150 mm). Contemporary half vellum, spine with red morocco bands, elaborately gilt in compartments, black morocco labels, marbled boards and edges, yellow coated endpapers. Frontispiece portrait and vignette title, folding facsimile manuscript page, text printed in two columns within single rule frame. Later 20th-century ownership inscription to front pastedown. Slight loss to morocco, lettering not affected, gilt faded, binding soiled and rubbed, superficial splits to marbled paper, endpapers marked. A very good copy.
