Original leather boards scuffed at edges and worn/bumped at corners. Front board's fore-edge exhibits small chip close to bottom corner. Both front and rear hinges have been modernly repaired; fresh cording exposed. Head and tail of spine lacking, binding exposed. Red leather title label still intact; gilt lettering moderately soiled but still legible. Front and rear gutters repaired. Light to moderate foxing throughout text-block - water dampness staining exhibited at bottom half of text-block. Three plates in rear of text-block exhibit water dampness stain at top corner. Plates exhibit off-setting to adjacent pages. Binding is intact, but fragile. Please see photos. Sir Charles Bell (1774-1842) was a Scottish surgeon, anatomist, physiologist, neurologist, artist and philosophical theologian. He is noted for discovering the difference between sensory nerves and motor nerves in the spinal cord. He is also noted for describing Bell's palsy. Bell's studies on emotional expression played a catalytic role in the development of Darwin's considerations of the origins of human emotional life; and while, he rejected Bell's theological arguments, Darwin very much agreed with Bell's emphasis on the expressive role of the muscles of respiration. Bell also combined his many artistic, scientific, literary and teaching talents in a number of wax preparations and detailed anatomical and surgical illustrations, paintings and engravings.
