Folio. A rare original issue of the weekly newspaper published in Annapolis for injured Union soldiers recuperating at the soldiers' hospital on the grounds of the U.S. Naval Academy. The Crutch, edited by Civil War volunteer nurse Louisa Titcomb, a prominent socialite from Portland, Maine, began publication January 9, 1864 and ran through the end of the war. It was available to soldiers recuperating at the hospital as well as other subscribers. This issue features reports of Civil War news, such as a report on the camp of union General Ulysses S. Grant and the Battle of Shiloh. Also featured are notices and lists of arrivals, deaths and soldiers returning to duty, as well as literary items and a rear page full of local advertisements, some geared toward services aimed at soldiers in Annapolis. On the back page, adjacent to the local advertising are reports from the other Annapolis military hospitals at Camp parole, Annapolis Junction, and St. John's College. Complete in four pages, this issue features contemporary fold-lines and mild edge wear and light foxing. Perfect for framing and display! #BB-003.
