A tooth powder (not a poster) tin prepared under the supervision of the Dental Research Division of the Byrd Antarctic Expedition. Height 10 cm, flip top opening with holes for shaking out the powder. Original paper labels intact, with browning and a few small chips. The tin is unopened. Byrd had reported that in the 1939-41 expedition, most of their medical problems were to do with teeth. Both Scott and Amundsen had reported significant problems with dental health in their expeditions. Most of the problems subsequently were attributed to dietary issues, particularly a deficiency in Vitamin C. A dentist was eventually included in the US 1956-57 McMurdo Sound wintering expedition. A unique item that provides a direct link with Byrd's expeditions and Antarctic exploration.
