Between 1931-1935, he was a member of the Eötvös Collegium in Budapest, majoring in French-Hungarian-German. In 1935-36 he was a fellow at the École normale supérieure in Paris, and in 1936 he was a French lecturer and librarian at the Eötvös Collegium. Between 1960 and 1969 he was President of the Hungarian PEN Club, between 1970 and 1973 President of the International Comparative Literature Association (AILC), Honorary Doctor of the Sorbonne, and a recipient of the French Ordre des Arts et des Lettres. István Sötér called it an "ideal novel" because "the depiction offers a felicitous, almost accidental completeness that few others besides Dostoevsky have". In his opinion, "Wuthering Heights is the most demonic work of 19th century English literature."
