Original lithographic map (90 x 120 cm) with contemporary outline colouring, divided into 32 sections and laid on later linen, the map with colour code indices outside the map's borders, marbled endpapers with publisher's advertisements to the verso, bound in contemporary boards with printed label to the upper cover, size when bound 245 x 175 mm Generally an excellent, clean copy. The colour-coded indices identify and illustrate the vast domains acquired by the Russian Empire in Central Asia (present-day Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Uzbekistan) in the late 19th century, as well as Afghanistan, eastern Persia, and parts of Baluchistan (present-day Pakistan), India, and China. The political boundaries shown on the map delineate the khanates of Bukhara, Khiva, and Afghanistan, as well as the borders of the Russian Empire, Persia, and Baluchistan. The map was published during the Second Anglo-Afghan War (1878 - 80) for use by army officers
