Porter Thompson, 1880 o Edward Porter Thompson (c.1835-1903), a captain in the Confederate Army during the American Civil War in the 6th Kentucky Infantry, which was part of the First Kentucky Brigade (or Orphan Brigade). Its original commander was John C. Breckinridge, former United States vice president, and Kentucky's former senator, who was enormously popular with Kentuckians. Thompson would be promoted to captain, and after the war, compose several histories and memoirs from his service with the unit through battles such as Shiloh, Vicksburg, and Chickamauga.
