First Editions of both Sermons, often found bound together. Modern binding, no pagination, 5.5 x 4", 18mo. In fair condition. Modern boards exhibit normal age-related wear - lightly scuffed edges & worn/bumped corners. Front & rear hinges worn at head, but still intact. Probable white glue residue found in fifth spine compartment from top. All edges painted red. Red leather title label clean - gilt lettering bright. Fresh end-pages clean - rear end-page exhibits pencil marginalia from previous book cataloguer. Previous ownership signature on original front fly-leaf: "Thomas Laurence his Book. 1680." Old-hand ink marginalia found at bottom edge of first sermon's title page: "1549, the 3rd year of the reign of Edward 6th." A few marginal repairs exhibited, as well as several headlines shaved to accommodate modern binding dimensions (or previous damage). Ink underlining and old-handing marginalia (in English) in several places throughout text-block. Normal age-related toning throughout text-block, with instances of finger-soiling. Hugh Latimer (1480-1555) was a Fellow of Clare College, Cambridge, and Bishop of Worcester during the Reformation, and later Church of England chaplain to boy King Edward VI. In 1555, under the Catholic Queen Mary I (Mary Tudor aka Bloody Mary) he was burned at the stake, becoming one of the three Oxford Martyrs of Anglicanism. The general preaching of Latimer before and after he became a bishop was very plain and homely, and exactly suited to the manners and tastes of the people to whom he spoke. He received a Bachelor of Divinity degree in 1524. The subject of his disputation for the degree was a refutation of the new ideas of the Reformation emerging from the Continent, in particular the doctrines of Philipp Melanchthon. Up to this time, Latimer described himself as "obstinate a papist as any was in England." Latimer began to preach publicly on the need for a translation of the Bible into English. This was a dangerous move as the first translation of the New Testament by William Tyndale had recently been banned. In early 1528, Latimer was called before Cardinal Thomas Wolsey and was given an admonition and a warning. The following year, Wolsey fell from Henry VIII's favor when he failed to expedite the annulment of Henry's marriage to Catherine of Aragon. In 1539, he opposed Henry VIII's Six Articles, with the result that he was forced to resign his bishopric and imprisoned in the Tower of London. He then served as Chaplain to Katherine Duchess of Suffolk. However, when Edward VI's sister, Mary I came to the throne, he was tried for his beliefs and teachings in Oxford and imprisoned. During his trial, Latimer argued that the doctrines of the real presence of Christ in the mass, transubstantiation, and the propitiatory merit of the mass were unbiblical. Latimer believed the welfare of souls demanded he stand for the Protestant understanding of the gospel. Latimer was burned at the stake along with Nicholas Ridley. John Day (or Daye) (c. 1522-1584) was an English protestant printer. He specialized in printing and distributing Protestant literature and pamphlets, and produced many small-format religious books, such as ABCs, sermons, and translations of psalms. He found fame, however, as the publisher of John Foxe's Actes an
