Large Oblong contemporary photograph album 15 inches by 11 inches; Navy Leather over boards, heavy black craft paper leaves, bound with black cord. Photos held in place by traditional black photo corners. String-tied navy leather over stiff paper boards. Contains over 650 gelatin silver black and white or sepia toned photographs measuring between 1 by 2 inches and 2 by 4 inches. A collection of photographs during the immediate aftermath of World War Two and the United States Occupying Forces in Germany. Photos of U.S. GI's, primarily in off-duty candid shots. Many photos of German cities, architecture, bombed ruins, and interaction with civilians. Some photos are captioned on back. Iconic Nazi buildings and statuary. Historic German and European landscapes, statuary and architecture. Many groupings of American G.I.'s including African American servicemen. Many photos showing team sporting events of the occupying forces (these American sporting events were used as a way to win hearts and minds of the German civilian population). Including many shots of U.S. armed forces football and baseball games played in major German stadiums; also shots of boxing. Many photos showing airplanes and other wartime equipment; shots of life on base including drills, mess hall and barracks. Also included are several Stengle picture postcards of historic architecture of Frankfurt (produced prior to WWII). Many of the photos are printed on Agfa-Brovira and Agfa-Lupex paper. Album and photos in excellent condition and well organized.
