Size: Mount 28 x 29 cm, print image 15.5 x 17 cm Condition: Print in very good condition, mount new. This amusing print on a musical theme show singers rehearsing for the Oratorio "Judith", which was written by William Defesch. The conductor, possibly Defesch himself, is seen with wig missing frantically conducting an unruly mob of singers and players. Hogarth originally made this engraving as a subscription ticket for one of his major engravings, A Modern Midnight Conversation, but subsequently he cut off the lettering beneath it and issued it as a separate print, as here. This impression dates from about 1820. It is an original print from Hogarth's own plate, not one of the many copies made.
