[Literary Magazine] FIRST APPEARANCE. Octavo (24 x 17cm), pp.661-664, with several blanks bound in as fillers. Taken from The Harmsworth Magazine, January 1899, with 3 illustrations by Henry Austin. Elegantly bound by Bayntun-Riviere, in half red morocco, gilt titles, marching buckram sides, marbled eps., t.e.g. A fine copy in a handsome leather binding. This early tale of adventure is WSC's only short story, and together with the novel 'Savrola' constitutes Churchill's entire fictional oeuvre. The story did not reappear until after the author's death, (June 1965, 'The Argosy'), nearly seven decades after the first publication.
