This mass-produced atlas was part of a wave of commercial geographic publications that were devoured by the American homefront during World War II. Little was known about the overseas places where U.S. troops were being deployed by the thousands, and eventually millions. A simple political map of each continent, the United States, and numerous theaters of engagement (Pacific, Eastern Front, Western Front, North Africa, etc.) are all included. A map on the back cover highlights the 'Defense Problem of the United States Navy' (i.e. huge distances between bases). Published in 1942 by Rand McNally. Sheet Width (in) 10.9 Sheet Height (in) 15.9 Condition Description 40 pp. atlas with stapled binding, separated from its stiff paper covers (present). Both front and back covers show heavy wear. Contents have become brittle with age and each page has several tears and chips along the fore-edge. Image loss is minimal, but overall the condition can best be described as fair.
