St. Valentine's Day greetings, correspondence & ephemera from the collection of Elisabeth Post-Morrow (1896-1992) who maintained an ongoing interest in the world of printing in all its forms including the St. Valentines day holiday from her earliest childhood. Mrs. Morrow " was a quiet philanthropist and generous supporter of her community a charter member of her literary club, historical society as well as a Trustee of the Packer Institute in Brooklyn. She had many other interests, including music (especially opera), books and printing, birds, and local natural areas. Before braille was done by machine, Elisabeth copied books in braille for the blind " (Obituary by Dorothy Jones and Faith McCutcheon) She maintained a life-long and wide correspondence concerning her typographic and ephemeral collecting interests. Approximately 160 items, dating circa early19th to the first third of the 20th century. We note that many of the Valentine items were sent to Mrs. Morrow in her childhood and are in their original mailing envelopes and with postal dates as early as 1904. Some of the Valentines she hand-made for family members are also here, with notations & dates to that effect; some of these hand-mades are quite clever and sophisticated, using cut-paper decorative techniques, question-and-answer riddles, paper layering and with nicely hand-inscribed well-wishes & humorous comments. A hand-made pink heart is inscribed "Mother July 27 1902 E.P." when she was six. 19th century items include many highly decorative embossed envelopes, elaborate cut-paper and layered illustrations and die-cut 3-dimensional effects; some offer mechanical manipulation for expression and display: pull-out sentiments, circular spirals suitable for hanging, fold-outs from the simple card type to the more complex that have visual puzzles and humor. Some are in protective sleeves, in as-collected condition by the owner. There are many splendid examples of 19th century decorative chromolithography & fold-outs in various forms. Some examples: 10" x 8" approx. hand-colored page-form published by B.F. Lloyd & Co. Edinburgh illustrated by Adolph Shcrodter very precisely printed in colors by Fr. Schenck Edinburgh; c. mid-19th century. An elaborately floral example printed and colored on thermoplastic. A spiral paper cut approx. 6" in diameter which when expanded reveals a die-cut scene of courting birds within. Another 'spiral' example with two dancing flower fairies (one detached). Cloth-fringed greeting examples. A printed paper 2 ½" die-cut heart with silk ribbon-pull which unfolds origami-like, the 'petals' of the heart revealing further well-wishes. Tiny (1 ¼" height") silhouettes of a courting couple, backed on white tissue. "Heart-searching Questions" hand-made hearts with heart-related riddles & answers. (2) "Hochachtung " a beautifully hand-colored courting scene framed in gilt, on card backer; a pull-tab at top reveals another scene and wishes from angels of love. "I searched the bookshops thro' and thro' to find the Greeting I'd send to you " hand-numbered limited edition card (# 1822 of 2500) by Buzza, contents hand-colored and with wishes on small cards attached via red silk ribbon threaded through the back panel. "Fondly Ise Dremin Ever of Thee" the Yellow Kid early cartoon figure in various fabrics, pasted-on a card background. Also 29 Valentine-themed postcards: 13 undivided back time period, the balance a few years later. Many have been posted, with the cancellations & stamps and most have been addressed to Elizabeth Post or other members of her family. Cards are elaborately chromolithographed, embossed and otherwise decorated, for the holiday and with appropriate sentiments. Makers include International Art Pub. Co., Nister, H.I. Robbins, F.A.
