Very thick octavo, hardbound in maroon cloth-covered boards with gilt titles on the cover and spine, a gilt-stamped illustration of stacked guns and a cannon, and a black-stamped star decoration; green sprigged endpapers. Double frontis portrait (Colonel John Sherman and Brig. Gen. Charles Garrison Harker). Profusely illustrated 368 illustrations, mostly photo portraits. An excellent brigade history, which presents a detailed history of the four units and a comprehensive roster of the 3224 men who served in the brigade, including hundreds of portraits of them. Nevins I, 104: "In scope alone, this volume must rank as one of the top ten narratives by a federal soldier; a necessity for any study of the Western theater." The Brigade was organized in the spring of 1861 by John Sherman, who resigned later that year to serve in the US Senate. The author was Lt. Col. of the 65th Ohio and author of another War book, Corporal Si Kleg and His "Pard" (1889).
