First edition, first printing, illustrating with Neurath's distinctive pictograms the development of agriculture and trade in Germany, published by the Social and Economic Museum in Vienna. Worldcat locates only three copes. Otto Neurath (1882-1945), together with his wife Marie and their colleague Gerd Arntz, was one of the inventors of Isotype, an international visual language which made use of simplified graphics and diagrams to represent complex information. He founded the Social and Economic Museum in 1923, where he used these principles to convey information to visitors from across Europe irrespective of their language. The present work uses diagrams to illustrate the relative proportion of workers in farming and industry, population growth, and the move from strip to consolidated farming. Octavo, 16 pages. Wire-stitched as issued. With double-page colour plate loosely inserted. With the neat ownership monogram of Dutch graphic designer Piet Zwart (1885-1977) to head of front wrapper and to inserted plate.
