"This interesting compilation of lithographed maps was published around 1939 by The George F. Cram Company of Indianapolis, Indiana. A series of small insets broken into two primary images cover much of America's territorial possessions in the Pacific before the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. The upper 'window' shows several remote islands and archipelagos including Guam, Midway, Samoa, Wake, Howland, Rose, and Baker. The last three were originally claimed by the U.S. for purposes of guano mining, but in the mid-1930s the American Equatorial Islands Colonization Project aimed to settle them with residents capable of constructing local airfields and radio facilities. These would serve as useful stopovers on trans-oceanic air routes, in addition to checking Japan's expansion in the Pacific. The lower image presents the Territory of Hawaii, with an inset map of Honolulu and the Midway Islands (duplicative from above). The plan of Honolulu notes important public buildings and military facilities. Of interest is the causeway to Quarantine Island, used as an internment camp for Japanese Americans during WWII.
