Voyage Nouveau De La Terre Sainte, Enrichi De Plusieurs Remarques ParticulièRes Qui Servent à L'intelligence De La Sainte Ecriture Naud, R.P. Michel Turkey, The Caucasus And Middle East
Very good antiquarian condition. Small octavo (4 by 7 inches). 661 pages. French calf, with spines in six compartments richly decorated in gilt. Missing title label. Minor worming to first 25 pages, but generally clean internally. Page edges colored red. Father Naud (1631-1683), a Jesuit priest, traveled to the Holy Land in 1673-74 as a member of the party of the French Ambassador Marquis de Noitel. Nau describes the churches, holy and sacred places he visited throughout Palestine, Lebanon and Syria. An Arabic speaker, Naud was able to collect information missed by earlier travelers. Nau notes that the Jews of Jerusalem were impoverished by Turkish rule, "paying heavily to the Turk for their right to stay here". Scarce. The 1702 edition offered here is the second printing of Naud's work, which was first published in 1679, five years after his return to France. An edition of 1674 referred to by Tobler in Bibliotheca Geographica Palaestinae is now considered not to exist. Later editions were also published in 1726, 1744 and 1757. For reference, see Blackmer 1185, also for the 1702 edition. OCLC Worldcat lists 9 copies of the 1679 first edition in libraries worldwide, and only 2 copies of the 1702 edition. COPAC lists copies of the 1679 edition in the National Library of Scotland and the Victoria and Albert Museum only, and copies of the 1702 edition in the British Library and Oxford only.
