This fascinating map of Jefferson County, Indiana was compiled by state geologist Edward Travers Cox for inclusion in his Sixth Annual Report of the Geological Survey of Indiana, published in Indianapolis in 1874. The image shows an intriguing overview of the prosperous county in southeast Indiana, situated adjacent to the Ohio River. Dozens of landowners are named across the numbered sections and two railroads are shown in operation. Labeled communities include Nashville, Madison (the county seat), Hanover College, New London, and Paris. Various geologic formations are also identified, including Jeffersonian Limestone well-known for its fossil content.
