First edition in book form, first impression. Commissioned as a BBC radio drama, the work was first broadcast on 25 January 1954 and then printed in the magazine Mademoiselle in February 1954, following the author's death in November the previous year. The posthumously published work has since become one of Thomas's best known. This copy is from the significant theatre collection of Clive Hirschhorn (b. 1940), who spent decades as the Sunday Express's film and theatre critic and whose various histories of Hollywood include The Warner Bros. Story (1978) and The Hollywood Musical (1981). Hirschhorn's ownership inscription is pencilled on the front pastedown. Rolph B21. Octavo. Original brown cloth, spine lettered in gilt. With dust jacket. With 9 pages of facsimile manuscript sheet music at end. A little rubbing, foxing to edges and endpapers, else clean; jacket unclipped, spine slightly faded and rubbed at ends, a little foxing to recto, more extensive on verso: a near-fine copy in very good jacket.
