Printed in the U.S.A. Date on the title page. First Printing. Prologue, List of Illustrations, numerous Plates and in-text depictions, Appendix, Index; xii, 795 pages. The original red cloth is still attractive, despite touches of rubbing to the bottom edge and corner tips; gilt lettering on the spine faint but discernible. The interior pages are crisp and creamy-bright; the binding is strong. However, the condition has been downgraded because of pencil by my philosopher-father on two dozen-or-so pages, leaving over 750 pages completely clean. (My father founded, then chaired for eighteen years, the Seminars in World Religion at Columbia University; his markings might be said to enhance rather than detract from the text.) Beige endpapers are decorated with different maps and are free of any markings. The original dust jacket, still here, is ripped and missing a portion of the spine; the flaps are intact with all text legible, including the original price ($6.00); the rear panel, with the author's picture, is a bit rubbed, but text is completely legible.
