First edition. Complete with [vi]+272 pages, 6 full page aquatint illustrations, including frontispiece. Large quarto (10¾ by 8½ inches). Contemporary diced calf, spine professionally rebacked in six compartments and decorated in blind and gilt. Internal hinges strengthened. Internally foxing to title page and offsetting to plates, although the wide-margined pages are generally clean. A very nice copy. Macmichael made several journeys to the Levant, visiting what is today Russia, Romania, Bulgaria, and Turkey in 1812, 1814, and 1817. On this last journey, he was accompanied by Thomas Legh, and chapter 4 contains an edited version of Legh's travels from Jerusalem to Constantinople via Hebron, the Dead Sea, Acre, Tyre, Baalbec, Damascus, and Palyra in what is present day Syria. The plates are after Macmichael's own drawings and include: the village of Rumelia, two views of Kiev, the public promenade of Jassy (in Moldava), the Moldavian post, and a ruined caravanserai in Hafsa.
