Publisher's brown cloth. 8vo. 310pp. Portrait. Third edition. Inscribed by the author to a Lucy H. Dresser of Putnam, CT in 1861. Chase has also written a four-line poem at the bottom "Life and light and beauty to our world are given / To fit the human soul for its home in Heaven". The autobiography of Warren Chase, a pioneer, reformer and free-thinker. Chase, born in New Hampshire in 1813, moved to Wisconsin Territory in 1834 where he established a utopian community based on the theories of French social philosopher Charles Fourier. Despite his radical beliefs in spiritualism, women's rights and free love Chase served in the first state legislature and ran for Governor in 1849. A very good copy with some light spotting to the cloth and some wear to the spine tips. The text is very good with light wear. The text is very good with some scattered foxing (occasionally heavy).
