Large 12mo. 8 x 5.25 inches, viii + 256 pp. Bound in later half calf, gilt, over marbled boards. All edges gilt. Spine rubbed and hinges starting to crack. Foxing of some plate margins and verso of plates; otherwise a very good copy. Illustrated by 26 steel engraved plates, including frontispiece and vignette title, most protected by tissue guards. Illustrated descriptions of travels in parts of France, northern Italy, including Milan, Verona and Venice, the Brenner Pass, the Tyrol and the Rhine, etc. By Leitch Ritchie (c.1800-65) Scottish novelist, journalist and editor. The text of the book is considered by some cataloguers to be a work of fiction. It was issued in the format of Heath's Annual (published 1832-45), which Charles Heath (1785-1848, engraver and publisher, commissioned Ritchie to write. The illustrations are engraved from the work of the painter, Clarkson Frederick Stanfield (1793-1867), known for his large scale marine subjects and landscapes.
