Beautiful volumes with descriptions, history and ownership history of hundreds of country homes of the nobility, castles and great estates throughout England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland. Many well-known estates/castles such as Balmoral, Sandringham, Adare, Arundel Castle, Windsor, Harewood House, Warwick Castle, Chatsworth, Blenheim, Cardiff, Cliveden, Hoker Hall, Powerscourt, Glamis Castle, Cholmondeley, Woburn Abbey, Hampton Court, Leeds Castle, many many more. The sections on each building describe it's lineage going back hundreds of years, its location, interiors, and/ownership information. All illustrations in color. Each volume has a full page chromolithograph (color) frontispiece , a very decorative title page with small illustration and about 40 full color full page chromolithographed illustrations by Alexander Francis Lydon and colored by Benjamin Fawcett. The illustrations have tissue guards. The author was a clergyman known for his historical works. Six hardcovers, with very handsome and elaborate gilt and black illustrations and detailing on the fronts and spines, 9x11 inches. All edges gilt. Covers are all in very good condition, firmly bound, some with light wear to corners and top and bottom of spines. Light "ghosting" from the title page illustration onto the page behind it. Vol 2 missing front endpaper, two volumes with inscription to former owner on the endpaper, Vol 3 and 4 have light moisture markings around edges of the first few pages (not particularly bad). Vol 6 has light mottling to the back cover (see images). Overall, a nice set. Heavy, will require extra postage.
