This work is by the outstanding pre-revolutionary Russian archaeologist and art historian, N.P. Kondakov (1844-1925). The book provides a detailed description not only of icons but also of the church utensils of the Martvili Monastery, which suffered devastation first by the Arabs and then by the Turks. Significant attention is also given to the Gelati Monastery, a medieval center of Orthodox Christianity in Georgia. The monastery possessed rich decorations, which the author captured in his photographs, accompanying each with a precise narrative. The author's immense experience in the knowledge of Eastern Christian iconography is undoubtedly a great merit. In each chapter of his work, N.P.
