In the entire history of the modern Olympics only three Games were cancelled, Germany 1916, Japan 1940, and London 1944. The European Games were cancelled due to the First and Second World Wars. But in Japan's case, the Japanese military government forfeited their right to host the Olympic Games in favor of waging an imperialist war against China. Tokyo Olympic Officials worked for over two years on this Official Report which showcases in part how they chose to represent the Western rituals of the Olympics to the Japanese people and how they planned to package Japanese culture to the world. Official report to the International Olympics Committee, containing an historical overview of Japan's efforts to host the Olympics, copies of letters between Japanese officials and the IOC, and maps, photos, and blueprints of proposed venues. Hardbound in textured indigo blue cloth with 5 Olympic rings blind-stamped on front cover, title printed on spine in white, 10" x 7.7", 439 numbered pages plus 32 pages of b&w plates, additionally illustrated with numerous in text b&w portraits, photographs, drawings, schematics and diagrams of the sporting venues, athletes, Olympic committee members, and other details including the microphones. Text in Japanese. VERY GOOD CONDITION: light wear to the covers, some fading and light scraping to the spine, internally, a touch of toning and light wear, 3" closed tear on leaf 431/2, otherwise tight, bright, clean and unmarked. Scarce. Only a few copies held in Japanese collections, one copy is held at the private Olympic Games Museum in Germany.
