A first impression of the revised and enlarged second edition - with two poems from the first edition removed and nine new poems added. ***The Poet Laureate John Masefield's copy, with his small ownership label on the front pastedown. ***Near fine in black cloth-covered boards with gilt titles to the spine. The gilt is still beautifully bright. Boards clean and unmarked. No bumps. No tears to the cloth. Corners sharp. Spine tight. Top edge of text-block slightly marked and dusty. Internally also near fine, with no inscriptions. None of the usual foxing. Pages clean. No tears or creases. Fore-edge untrimmed as is common with Faber editions from this period. Quality paper stock used. ***In a near fine price-clipped dustwrapper. The thin and fragile dustwrapper is remarkably clean and complete, with just very slight nibbling at the top of the spine. No chips or tears. Just a small ink line mark on the back panel. Spine of dustwrapper very slightly darkened. The red titles to the spine and front panel are bright and unfaded. ***69 pages. 230mm x 150mm. ***'Mr. Spender's "Poems", after running through two impressions, now appears in a second, and we believe definitive edition. The author, finding that this volume (by which his reputation was first definitely established) represents a stage of his poetic development through which he has now passed, has removed two of the poems included in the First Edition, but added nine more which belong to the same period. The present volume, therefore, includes "all that the author wishes to preserve" of his work up to the present year.' (Quote taken from the front panel of the dustwrapper) ***'"An unmistakable declaration of genius." -- Fortnightly Review.' ***"The lyrical impulse of these poems is so urgent that they leave in the mind no doubt to interfere with the pleasure and excitement they arouse." -- Manchester Guardian."' (Quotes taken from the front flap of the dustwrapper). ***Second edition - revised and enlarged. A pre-war Stephen Spender title in its original dustwrapper, in beautiful collectable condition. Of extra interest as this copy is from the library of one-time Poet Laureate John Masefield. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.
