Covers are bumped to corners and spine, stained and marked with significant colour loss to reverse. Binding intact but a bit shaky. Decorated endpapers, creased. 518pp., with b/w photographs and illustrations. Index at the front, creased. All the contents clean and bright. Loosely inserted a leaflet from the Church Schools Appeal Fund 1907, with some building measurements scribbled on reverse. First published in 1878, in 1884, the journal was rebranded the CTC Monthly Gazette and Official Record under its new editor E. R. Shipton, the Secretary of the Club. This reflected the decision the previous year to rename the organisation the Cyclists' Touring Club to acknowledge not just high wheelers, but all cyclists, including tricyclists, many of whom were women. Shipton's CTC Gazette blossomed in the craze years of the mid-1890s, a golden age for cycling, the CTC and cycling journals. The name of the publication was abbreviated to Cyclists' Touring Club Gazette in 1899, coinciding with the club's 21st anniversary and peak membership at 60,449. By 1900, from its origins as a humble circular, the CTC Gazette had matured into a well-respected cycling title, running almost 600 well-illustrated pages annually.
