The Atlas Miller is considered by many scholars as probably the most beautiful atlas of all time. In fact, it was devised as a gift by the King of Portugal, Manuel I, for Charles V, then emperor of the Holy Roman Germanic Empire. However, its purpose was not to flatter the emperor, but to deceive him in order to cancel the Magellan expedition. This wonderful atlas was made in 1519 by the cartographers Lopo Homem and Pedro and Jorge Reinel, along with the miniaturist António de Holanda, and consists of 8 maps of 1.4 x 2 feet (41.5 x 59 cm), in addition to two maps of 2 x 3.8 feet (61 x 117 cm).
