The Vicar Of Wakefield Oliver Goldsmith Victorian Decorative

Large vintage book with a bright decoration to the front and spine in gold and 16 full page colour illustrations by Edmund J Sullivan with tissue guards. There are also in text line drawings. It is a late Edwardian book published in 1914. Lovely to read and for decoration or set dressing. The Vicar of Wakefield was originally published in 1766 and is probably Oliver Goldsmith's most famous novel. It is written in the style of an autobiography by the fictional vicar. This is a large format and measures: 26cm x 18cm x 5cm All of the plates are bright and clean and the tissue guards are present in a couple of instances folded and creased. It is in very good condition for its age. The binding is secure with no loose or missing pages. Some minor cracking. As you can see the page edges are rough cut and internally they are unevenly cut and the paper used in the rougher thicker type. There is some age spotting to the outside edge. Internally, it is very bright and clean with just the occasional small foxing spot. The tissue guard to the frontis is more foxed. There are no reader marks bar two small ink inscriptions, one to the back of the front board and the other to the top of the first front endpaper dated 1916. The decorated leaf green cloth boards are good. The top corners are bumped but no significant rubbing. There is some minor marking to the back. The colour is generally bright and true. The spine ends are crushed and the design on the spine remains strong although the spine is slightly sunned. The front board is a slightly bowed which you can see in the photo. All in all a good vintage copy and a nice addition to any decorative book nook. Please check the photos for a full condition report.
