Tobacco was introduced to the region during the Dutch colonial period, and it became one of the main cash crops grown on the plantations in Deli. The fertile soil and favorable climate of the region were conducive to growing high-quality tobacco. During the colonial era, tobacco cultivation in Deli was heavily reliant on the labor of indigenous workers as well as immigrants from Java and other parts of the Dutch East Indies. The tobacco plantations were large-scale operations, often owned by Dutch colonialists or European trading companies. By 1872, 13 foreign-owned plantations were operating in Deli.
