First edition. 4 duodecimo volumes (4 x 6.5 inches), 468 pages, 498 pages, 592 pages, and 555 pages. Full period calf, decorated in gilt to the spine with 5 raised bands. Corners rubbed and some wear, but generally very good. Internally clean. Complete with 27 engraved plates. The book comprises a general history of the Turks followed by descriptions of the reigns of the first 24 emperors of the Ottoman Empire, starting with the beginning of the Empire in the 13th century through to Ibrahim ("the deranged") who ruled from 1640 to 1648. It is of particular interest for its 27 engraved full page portraits of the 24 Ottoman sultans, as well as of the prophet Mohammed, Tamerlane Emperor of the Mongols, and Scander-Berg prince of Albania. The 1689 first edition, as here, is scarce. Atabey's otherwise comprehensive library on the Ottoman World only contains a copy of the 1697 second edition.
