The original maroon cloth is quite worn---especially on the spine, where there is loss at the head and tail; gilt lettering and decoration remain clear. NOTE that the rear joint has split almost completely, though the text-block itself has remained strong. The interior has fared much better: There are tiny pale spots on the preliminary pages (half-title, title, preface); but the rest is only gently toned, and is clean except for very pale penciling on a number of pages. Austin's elaborate device appears on the copyright page. There are two early names: James Bitswell [?] on the front free endpaper and George A. Vantow [?] Birkhill - 1874. [Both are visible in my five images of the actual book.] As with every book from my father's collection, tipped-in at the front is the small, attractive, acid-free bookplate pictured on my homepage.
