This engaging pictorial view shows the island of Okinawa about three months after V-J Day concluded the Second World War in the Pacific. The former Japanese stronghold was now a United States administrative outpost, equipped with numerous military facilities, airfields, and harbors. Communication wires reach across the vast ocean to somewhere over the horizon (presumably America). While a few mentions of the prior battles are noted (i.e. Japanese Last Stand), the inclusion of important cultural sites and emphasis on local architecture reflects contemporary efforts to 'move past' the horrors of the conflict. The image was originally created using Japanese surveys by J. Henshell (probably Jay Morton Henshell) in November 1945. Based on the paper style, this is probably a somewhat later reprint. Sheet Width (in) 22.75 Sheet Height (in) 16.25 Condition Description Probably a later 20th century reprint. Issued on glossy paper (single sided) that shows moderate wrinkling and a vertical crease along the center. Toning on the verso does not affect the image. Small spot of loss in the center (a white spot) as a result of the original printing process. Good to very good overall.
